- The title of this novel came from a poem by Dylan Thomas. “Light breaks where no sun shines, where no sea runs, the waters of the heart push in their tides.” It was my hardest title – it didn’t come to me until the very end of the novel.
- The quote in the front of the novel, which is a traditional Irish Storytellers opening, came from a book called Celtic Love, by Caitlin Matthews.
- The myth of the Claddagh ring is real legend in the Irish culture (Or is it a real story??)
- My research on the Claddagh village was fascinating and enchanting – I found an out of print book called the Claddagh Village and was enthralled with the photos and stories of this fascinating land.
- The storm in the story is historically accurate (and very sad).
- I designed Kara’s wedding gown as I wish I’d designed my own. Unfortunately, I was married in the late 80s and my wedding gown looked vaguely like a chandelier.
- My dear friend, Marjory Wentworth – the poet laureate of South Carolina – helped me write the lyrics to the song at the end of the novel. I wish I could write songs…..oh well.
- The singer in the last paragraph of the novel is Vince Gill singing Whenever you come around – my favorite song.
