The first gift is a short story I wrote after I met the most enchanting ninety-two-year-old woman outside London. In 1939, she was a child evacuee, just like the sisters, Hazel and Flora Lea, in my novel. She captivated me with a tale about her family who once owned a pub called The Live and Let Live (yes, that is the very real name of a very real pub outside London). This woman and her little brother were sent to the countryside during Operation Pied Piper, and her story moved me to write this fictional account of the siblings when they cross paths with Hazel and Flora Lea.
The second gift is a photo travel journal of my weeks-long research trip in England. Some of the most amazing and synchronistic things happened during that journey and I want to share them with you before you read the novel. I think some of the novel’s scenes will come alive for you after you see photos of the mystical and very real landscape.
