The Homewreckers

Rate this book
Summer begins with Mary Kay Andrews, in this delightful summer read about flipping houses, and finding true love.

Hattie Kavanaugh went to work helping clean up restored homes for Kavanaugh & Son Restorations at 18; married the boss’s son at 20; and was only 25 when her husband, Hank, was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Broken hearted, but determined to continue the business of their dreams, she takes the life insurance money, buys a small house in a gentrifying neighborhood, flips it, then puts the money into her next project. But that house is a disaster and a money-loser, which rocks her confidence for years to come. Then, Hattie gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: star in a beach house renovation reality show called The Homewreckers, cast against a male lead who may be a love interest, or may be the ultimate antagonist. It's a question of who will flip, and who will flop, and will Hattie ever get her happily-ever-after.

Filled with Mary Kay Andrews's trademark wit, warmth, junking trips, and house porn, The Homewreckers is a summer beach delight.

The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews

Hattie Kavanaugh has had it rough since her teens. Her dad got in trouble, her parents split up, her mom moved away, and she had to move in with her best friend's family. She married at 20 and was a widow at 25 but she didn't give up her love of home renovation. After her first success, her next house was a huge money pit and she's in debt and is at risk of losing her own beloved little home. Now her family consists of her and her rescue mutt and she's even pawned a precious ring that belonged to her late husband's family, just trying to stay afloat. She's a hard worker but nothing seems to be going her way.

A producer, Mo, hears a conversation between Hattie and her father-in-law and he wants to create a show about flipping houses in Savanah, with Hattie as the centerpiece. The show will be on a tight timeline and before Hattie knows it she is going to be restoring a wreck of a home, dealing with people she never would have spoken to in the past, and battling with her designer co-star, Trae. Pretty soon Hattie, whose grief over her late husband has her planning to be alone the rest of her life, is caught between the affections of Trae and Mo.

Hattie's bad luck continues when something belonging to a woman, who has been missing seventeen years, is found on the property of the house she is restoring. Soon investigators are involved, which introduces us to my favorite character, Makarowicz, a retired detective, who wants to get to the bottom of a long ago murder. This story is a romance, murder mystery, and journey of forgiveness and learning to move on after loss, and I enjoyed that the story was so complex and didn't just focus on the romantic side of things.

This is a Southern Chick-lit/Romantic Suspense. The beginning (first 30%) of this book I found to be boring and hard to get into. I really enjoyed the book after the first 30% of the book. I found the characters ok. My favorite thing about this book was the mystery and the story this old house tells. I did not see the twist coming at all before the reveal. I loved the ending, and the suspense at the ending. The romance at the ending I found to be cute, and I think the characters that ended up together fit so well. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (St. Martin's Press) or author (Mary Kay Andrews) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

Hattie is a young widow who loves restoring old homes. Hattie works closely with her late husband's father's restoration company until a recent project, an old Victorian home that was a money pit.

Needing to get out of the loss and renew her confidence once more, Hattie took on an opportunity to flip an old beach house for reality tv on HPTV where she can continue to restore old homes in Savannah.

This is a buddy read with Jenn and we both enjoyed this delightful summer treat! I've only read one Christmas book by MKA before The Homewreckers and didn't quite know what to expect. I'm so glad we picked this one as it was cozy, light, and entertaining. It has a decades-old unsolve mystery attached to the house Hattie is renovating for the tv show. We had a lot of fun discussing about the mystery and a potential romantic partner for Hattie. 💞

The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews is a 2022 St. Martin’s Press publication.

As the blurb states- The Summer begins with MKA…

Because this is a perfect book for a day at the beach!

Hattie Kavanaugh, a young widow, takes over her husband’s family-owned home restoration business. But after sinking all her money into a real loser, she’s ready to throw in the towel. But, as fate would have it, Hattie is offered a spot on a new reality show, renovating a beach house, called ‘Homewreckers’….

This opportunity could salvage her reputation, and help her recover her losses...

This is a delightful romance. It’s cute, smart, witty and fun- and will be a special treat for anyone who likes house flipping reality shows.

But this story also has a dark side… a cold case involving the disappearance of the high school football coach's wife, seventeen years prior.

Hattie and her best friend, Cass, get involved in the investigation after their beach house restoration unwittingly exposes new evidence about the case, amid a string of obvious attempts to sabotage the project.

The two threads are separate, but also intermingle, as the mystery could have negative connotations for the show.

I thought the author did a great job of creating the reality show atmosphere, which felt very authentic, especially all the behind the scenes dramas and manipulations.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I’m a little late to the MKA party-and have only read a handful of her books-

But better late than never! Can’t wait to read more of her books!

I have been dying to read a Mary Kay Andrews book for years. I have almost all of them on my TBR. So when I saw she was coming out with a new one and it had a mystery attached I was ecstatic! I immediately started scouring all my Overdrive Accounts (Libby for most people).

Side note on my TBR. My TBR is what some might call a crazy persons list..lol. I have a huge pile of books that there is no way any human (ok most humans….because some of my Goodreads & Booksta friends are able to read so much I doubt they sleep or may possibly be super humans who can read at the speed of light 😁) can finish in a lifetime. So odds are slim I would have ever really gotten to any of MKA books.

Hattie is an early 30’s widowed contractor. She is working on flipping houses in Savannah Georgia with her father-in-law Tug who owns Kavanaugh & Sons Restoration company. Tug gave Hattie her start in her career starting from the bottom, cleaning construction sites at just 16 years old. That’s also where she met the love of her life Tug’s son Nick, who died in a car accident 7 years prior.

Hattie talks Tug into reviving a Victorian home that turns out to be more of a money pit than it was worth. Both Hattie and Tug took a big loss financially, and even more Hattie lost confidence in herself. But one positive thing came out of the Victorian homes ashes. Mo a producer for HPTV (think HGTV) sees an opportunity for his new show starring Hattie Kavanaugh. He knew after seeing Hattie on the job she would be perfect in front of the camera. Now he only has to convince her to take the job and the network into his plan. After lots of back and forth with Hattie and Rebecca one of the heads of HPTV, Mo has his new show. A little different than what he pictured but The Homewreckers is ready to go and start filming.
Hattie finds the perfect place for the show and for her budget, a 1922 condemned little beach house on Tybee Island that it’s appeal is in the lot space and a gorgeous view. It needs lots of TLC but she’s already picturing the finished cottage.

The project goes horribly wrong right from the start. Rebecca brings in Trae Bartholomew a self absorbed LA designer who seems to have set his designs on Hattie. But is it for TV or the real deal? The former home owner’s family is resentful Hattie was able to buy their property and throwing problems her way, code enforcement visits are repeatedly requested by an anonymous source and mysterious “accidents” keep happening at the house.

But the biggest dilemma is when Lanier Ragan’s billfold is found on the Beach House in the old fashioned bathroom’s razor slot. Lanier was a young married and beloved teacher when she just up and disappeared in 2005 leaving her husband and her little girl behind. Most of the town was sure she had run off, possibly with another man. Now it looks like there might’ve been foul play involved. Will Hattie be able to finish the house in time for the networks deadline, or will bad luck keep on coming? Will the town finally find out what happened to Lanier Ragan all those years ago?

The Homewreckers is a mix of romance and cozy mystery. But for readers looking for the romance (which is kind of what the goodreads synopsis alludes too) there really isn’t much. And when it does finally happen there is no sizzle and I felt more fizzle.

The mystery was the best part for me. I loved that Hattie was part of solving a mystery all the way back from the early 2000’s. Cold cases are always interesting to me. But even that wasn’t perfect. MKA lined up quite a bit of despicable characters, but I knew almost from the start who did it. And that is fine for some stories but it just didn’t work great for this. The story just wasn’t strong enough.

I picked up the audio for The Homewreckers and that was a plus. Kathleen McInerney was the perfect narrator. She reflected the different characters perfectly, changing her tone and style to fit each one. It was so easy to listen to with her melodic voice.

Overall this was OK. I really didn’t have any interest until after 1/4 of the way through. It ended up being a bit too long. I think if it had a stronger direction in one of it’s two genres maybe I would have enjoyed it more. But I’d still say The Homewreckers was worth the read.

This would make a perfect beach read. I think THW is ideal for chick lit lovers who aren’t looking for a strong storyline or anyone who has interests in home renovations/improvement. That’s actually what about 60% or more of the story was about anyways.

Thanks to St Martin Press for this ARC book for a fair review. This book is so great I couldn’t put it down, and carried it with me EVERYWHERE. I see why this author has written 30 books in 30 years because she knows how it’s done. I’ve worked years ago in television in Savannah GA as a Chief Meteorologist and this story was so fun to hear about Savannah and Tybee Island and the moss and summer heat and the white sandy beaches—I just couldn’t get enough of it. The story is nonstop action with characters revealing their darkest secrets along the way as Hattie renovates a home plagued with problems (we’ve all been there, right?!! Gasp!). You’ll ❤️ this addictive summer read! Comes out May 2022–add it to your forever library!!

I enjoyed this story about a young widowed home flipper by Mary Kay Andrews. Our MC, Hattie Kavanaugh, is a strong, smart, and independent woman. She works for her father-in-law's renovation company and decides to participate in a house flipping TV show in order to make up for a business decision she made that lost her and the company a lot of money.

The story includes snippets from the filming of the tv show and a lot of discussion about the home renovations. If you are a fan of those types of TV shows, this book may be just the one for you.

For me, the storyline was good, if expected, but the romance was underdeveloped. Our two main characters hardly show any interest in each other for the majority of the story, so there wasn't much investment in their relationship.

Overall, another decent story by MKA. It was enjoyable, didn't take much brain power, and was a nice break from some deeper and heavier reads.

I listened to the audio of this one. It felt a little long, coming in at 14 hours and 30 minutes, but the narrator, Kathleen McInerney, fit the part very well and did a wonderful job.

Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing me with a complimentary electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

There is no doubt in my mind that if Mary Kay Andrews writes a new book, I’ll read it. Hands down, she’s one of my favorite authors and truly has been for years! She always writes the most relatable and fun books with their own unique twists. In this one, we are on set as a reality house flipping show deals with a mystery surrounding a local teacher’s disappearance. Both the mystery and the authors take on home improvement/house flipping is realistic and entertaining. So, if either of these things intrigue you then I highly recommend giving The Homewreckers a try!

Not only are readers solving the mystery alongside these amazing characters, but they are slowly watching two people fall in love. And while the book doesn’t revolve around this romance it is an added benefit to the reading experience! I just adored Hattie so much and was thrilled to find that even though she lost her husband 7 years ago that she could move on and find happiness and love again.

All around, this is the perfect beach read and I would highly recommend it to those who love a women’s fiction novel that incorporates a mystery, home renovation/reality tv, and a splash of romance!

Hattie Kavanaugh has been renovating old houses since was eighteen, but the one she currently was renovating with her father-in-law was one she couldn't handle or afford.

She had to stop the project and sell.

The day before she gave up, Mo appeared.

He was a television producer who wanted to film her from the minute she stepped onto the property of the fixer upper, during the renovation, and when the fix up was finished.

She resisted his offer at first, but realized she had to take it.

After selling the money-pit house, Hattie had to find another fixer upper for next to nothing because she had next-to-no money. She luckily found one and bought a condemned property sight unseen.

She really did buy a lemon of a house, but that wasn't the only problem she encountered. She definitely got herself into more than a home restoration.

She and her crew found things in the condemned property that gave clues to a twenty-year-old unsolved missing person/murder investigation.

This setback didn't stop her. You will love Hattie and her resilience and strength.

Ms. Andrews certainly knows how to write a great story.

Fans of mystery, fans of books you won’t want to stop reading, and fans of Ms. Andrews' books will love THE HOMEWRECKERS.

Another gem that is a perfect read for summer or any season - don’t miss it. 5/5

I am a huge MKA fan and boy this book does not disappoint. Being a Georgia girl, I loved the setting in Savannah. I know all the streets and really felt like I was a part of The Homewreckers show! Now any good Southern cook will tell you we don't measure ingredients or follow recipes. We cook from the heart. And that's just what MKA did with this book. You have a little romance, a chunk of mystery, a dash of forgiveness, a sprinkle of life after loss and what comes out is a beautiful beach read that you'll devour!! I loved the story, the character dynamics, the romantic tension and the mystery. Every old house has a story to tell and this one on Tybee Island has one heck of a story hidden in it's walls.

This is a great read you won't want to miss!!

In my world it is never summer until I read a book by Mary Kay Andrews, and as soon as I saw the cover of The Homewreckers I just knew I was going to love it. I got started reading MKA's books after she started adding some mystery to her romance books, and this really took me back to the earlier stories I read. The last couple have felt a bit too long for me, but I didn't have any issues with the length of The Homewreckers at all and found myself completely lost in Hattie's story. As per usual, MKA made the setting feel alive, and I could practically picture myself right there in Savannah, GA with the characters. The cover reminds me a bit of The Newcomer, while the storyline reminded me a touch of The Honey-Don't List in terms of getting a behind the scenes look at what goes into a TV show.

The mystery aspect of The Homewreckers was great, and I loved watching as Hattie went sleuthing trying to figure everything out. I am not going to say what since the synopsis on Goodreads doesn't mention it, and I think it is best to find out for yourself! The audiobook is also a standout and is narrated by Kathleen McInerney. She was perfection for this story and for Hattie, and between how much I loved listening to her and how much I loved the book in general, I finished the whole thing in just a day. It is still on the longer side with the audio being over 14 hours and the book itself being over 400 pages, but I didn't think it felt like it at all. I loved almost every single one of the characters, and there is a whole lot of emotion, heart, and humor making its way into the storyline. I loved every moment of The Homewreckers, and if you are looking for a gripping and luscious beach read, this is it.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

“The Homewreckers” is an entertaining mash up of reality TV desperate for new content, and a young woman struggling trying to make it in the cut throat world of flipping houses. Hattie Kavanaugh and her crew are good at what they do, renovating historic houses in Savannah, Georgia, making them current and modern without sacrificing their character.

Unfortunately, not every renovation is a financial success. Kavanaugh finds herself in the middle of an economic crunch that could mean the end of her dream and of her construction company. An opportunity arises that could be the answer to all her economic woes. A reality-show production company, desperate for new content, arrives in Savannah. Kavanaugh provides everything they are looking for – a woman with a dream and an interesting past, in an historic city with a beach house in need of major renovation; the show is sure to be a hit. Of course, bothersome complications and unexpected “things” show up that threaten to take down everyone and everything.

Andrews created a complex cast of characters -- the good, the bad, and the in-between. They drive the plot from start to finish. Readers meet the dedicated home remodeling specialist, her talented and dedicated crew, the smart TV show scout, a temperamental celebrity designer, and an erratic TV executive; all have complicated backstories and even more complicated relationships that keep readers entertained and turning the pages.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Kathleen McInerney with a multi-dimensional voice, at times melodic, reassuring, matter-of-fact, mysterious, or cautionary. The narration is skillful and professional. It nicely reflected the personalities of each character and conveyed the tone of each situation to the listener.

I received a review copy of “The Homewreckers” from Mary Kay Andrews, Kathleen McInerney, and Macmillan Audio. It is an enjoyable story with layer upon layer of uncertainty, excitement, conflict and romance.

“The Homewreckers” is now available in print, on Kindle, and as an audiobook from independent bookstores, online booksellers, retail stores, public libraries and anywhere books are sold.

Prediction: This will be one of the best beach reads this summer! Mary Kary Andrews delivers again with this story of finding love and house flipping. Add in a murder mystery and reality tv. And then there's a lot of laughs too! A fun read with a touching plot.

The main character, Hattie Kavanaugh, makes a living restoring houses - working at her father-in-law's company. She is a widow who sunk all her savings into a money pit of an old house and she loses her money and her confidence. Then she gets an opportunity to star in a reality tv show with a handsome male lead - she just has to scrape together enough money to buy a house in need of restoring for the show and hopefully, make some money both on the show and the house. There are a lot of hurdles, and then there's an old murder mystery that raises its head. Overall, a fine beach read.

I found Hattie to be a strong characterd who is admirable in her determination and courage facing obstacles. I also really enjoyed her love for Savannah and her unwavering work ethic. I despised one character and I won't say who because I'm sure you will despise the same one. Hattie's best friend is just what you would want in a good friend - cast perfectly. The descriptions of the houses in Savannah provide atmosphere and a perfect backdrop for this story.

Thanks to St. Martin's Press through Netgalley for an advance copy. This book will be published on May 3, 2022.

3.5 ⭐️ rounding up, a cute summer / beach read with a mild mystery twist that kept it a little more interesting that i even expected. thank you, kristy for my copy! 🤍

Hattie Cavanaugh is the kind of woman who pulls herself up by her bootstraps when she gets knocked down. At 18 years old, she left her small Catholic girls school in Savannah, Georgia and began working for the Cavanaugh & Sons construction company, and not long after, she married the Cavanaugh’s son, Hank. Only a few short years later, Hattie lost Hank in a motorcycle accident, but she poured her heartbreak into building their dream business of restoring and flipping rundown historic homes.

After a restoration that required a large investment of time and money flops, Hattie is approached by tv producer Mo Lopez with a project that can solve all her troubles and help her repay her beloved in-laws. Mo casts Hattie as the star of a new beach house renovation show, “The Homewreckers,” where she can do what she loves and make up for the losses from her failed project. But the show has a twist, she must work alongside an LA designer who has potential to be a love interest or a villain. On top of it all, the house purchased for the first season of Homewreckers has its own secrets that Hattie must manage along with a strict deadline from the tv network. Will she be able to deliver on the project and discover love again?

The Homewreckers by Mary Kay Andrews has a host of endearing characters, unexpected mysteries, and lots of Savannah charm to make this a great summer read. I enjoyed getting a glimpse into the world of home renovation tv while uncovering a whodunnit tale simultaneously.

Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) provided by the Author and Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

The narrator, Kathleen McInerney, does an excellent job with "The Homewreckers". She has a distinct voice for each character and adds so much to the listening experience. I loved this story of a widow who is trying to make her way in the male dominated construction trade. Hattie's father-in-law told her "Never fall in love with something that won't love you back." But Hattie can't help losing her heart to old houses and hot TV guys. I just love this genre bending book! It doesn't know if it is a Romance, a Mystery, Chick Lit, Contemporary Romance or What Ever. But I do know that I haven't read a book in a long time that I have enjoyed this much from the first page to the last.

Hattie Kavanaugh has broken her father-in-law's cardinal rule for house flipping: "Never fall in love with something that can't love you back" and is paying the price when she loses an old Savanah house that she has gotten over her head while flipping. When Mo Lopez, producer for HPTV, rides past this wonderful old house he is drawn to it and the fisty woman working on it. He proposes a new TV show about flipping in Savanah and he wants Hattie to be the star.

The house Hattie finds is a real 100-year-old wreck of a waterfront beach house property on Tybee Island. First, she has to obtain the place and then she has to deal with the Creedmore's who let it go to ruin and failed to pay the taxes. Lucky for Hattie, she wins the sealed foreclosure bid. But the production schedule set by the network is going to be tight, real tight and the budget is tighter. Add to that a handsome, L.A. designer and the executive at the network demanding hot and steamy "The Homewreckers" interactions and Hattie has a lot to deal with.

When the wallet of a long missing woman shows up in the house, that is just the start of a series of nasty happenings with Hattie right in the middle. Hattie and Mo grow closer together as the strange occurrences and the search for what happened to the missing woman haunt the production. Now Hattie has a choice: the hot L.A. designer or the solid producer for her own production of an HEA.

I haven’t really read this author, but she was a donation to the Little Free Library Shed, so I decided to give her a try. On the cover two things stood out.

Booklist said: “A perfect summer escape.”

And, the marketing team said…

Love, Murder, and Faulty wiring.

I think it was murder that stood out for me.

This is my experience with this book in a nutshell…

This story takes us outside of Savannah, Georgia into the life of Hattie as she meanders through all sorts of challenges.

She is a recent widow who has also lost her savings on a house that is unfixable.
She has a contract to become a new reality tv home improvement star, and she discovers a body that may be that of a missing school teacher from 17 years ago. Oh, and she has an attraction to the show’s creator/producer, Mo.

The prose is tight and witty. The characters are sweet, quirky and amusing.

The plot (including subplots) unravels and intertwines into a tale of life, loss, grief, heartbreak, murder, mishaps, dangerous situations, drama, community, family and love.

Overall, this can be considered a refreshing and entertaining story, that we have been-here-before, but it still is worth a read.

Okay, breathe.

Another great read by MKA. This is an author I love and always read her books. They are so full of heart and always have a mystery in there too. This is a local author for me as I live in ATL and have been to Tybee Island several times, so some of the places she writes about in her books are familiar to me. This is a really good story about a tv network filming a home improvement type show on Tybee Island and what happens to all the people involved in the shooting, and there is a body found on the property which makes it more interesting. Definitely recommend.

Oh, how I LOVED this! It’s a FUN romp into the chaotic world of reality tv and flipping houses.. well actually, one in particular.. a 100-year-old (VERY DILAPIDATED) Tybee waterside cottage that holds a very dark secret she’s been dying to tell. There’s a sweet romance, and a lot of suspense surrounding a mystery that kept my attention to the very end!! I could literally feel the warmth of summertime and the beachy atmosphere of Charleston and Tybee Island, and I loved the mentions of the unique architecture on the homes there. This gives you all those wonderful down-home southern feels through the scenery, people, food, and if like me.. you’ll find yourself rooting for Hattie to find her happily-ever-after!!

THE HOMEWRECKERS
BY: MARY KAY ANDREWS

4.5 Stars!

After reading and loving an ARC by Mary Kay Andrews called, "Summers at the Saint,: and loving it, I was eager to read another novel by this author. I didn't love this one as much, but it was interesting enough to keep me reading. When you see a title like "Homewreckers," if you think like I do you might think of love triangles or people breaking up marriages. This is not about that book. "Homewreckers," is the name of a reality television show that was about restoring historic homes to their former beauty while buying them in bad shape and at a fraction of the cost that Hattie the main character does with her best friend Cass and her father-in-law. In this case it was a beach front house that was auctioned off and resold for close to eight hundred and seventy five thousand dollars. Hattie bought it for less than thirty thousand dollars so she made a great profit.

The interest for me was the description of the condemned home and how it was turned into a beautiful restoration project keeping it in line with its historic origins. A producer and photographer filmed each phase and I enjoyed the eclectic pieces that were added that Hattie had used that were remnants from other jobs Room by room I could visualize how using ornate decoration added to the restored beauty as vivid descriptions of the work was done in a deadline. I loved the process of sanding down the original wood floors and varnishing them to their former beauty. That's one of the examples of a whole novel of keeping the house as close to reusing what was there already with replacing certain elements that enhanced the original structures. From start to finish I got the details of what was done and I loved that Hattie and Cass who were best friends oversaw the whole job.

There is a mystery woven into the narrative that begins with finding Hattie's high school favorite English teacher's wallet hidden behind an old medicine cabinet. She went missing seventeen years ago and this adds to the narrative as a likable retired widowed detective from Atlanta investigates her disappearance. He gets along great with Hattie who both are lovable characters. The only reason Hattie has allowed filming of her restoration job is because they are paying for materials needed to replace what needs to be gutted and the damaged and rewired and plumbing costs. Along with kitchen cabinets and updated appliances.

I could picture in my minds eye the work as it was done from the descriptions of what needed replacing before and the process of actually great descriptions as the work getting done to the final beautifully unique place that would be so inviting and charming I would buy it because it felt so cozy with charm. I enjoyed this more than I thought that I would in the beginning. It got me to finishing it in two sittings because the writing is so engaging. This was a comfort reading experience which was exactly what I was looking for. It is offered for free to Kindle Unlimited Subscribers on Amazon. I hardly ever use my membership so this was a welcome surprise to find something that I actually liked offered.

Question? 🤔
Are you ready for a touch-your-heart and make you laugh-out-loud book? The Home Wreckers is a murder mystery with humor liberally sprinkled in. Mary Kay Andrews writes the perfect amount of romance without graphic sexual scenes. I love The Home Wreckers and highly recommend it for readers who enjoy a good giggle and a heart-grabbing novel. It will be published May 3rd. I can't wait for you to read it and tell me what you think!

Hattie Kavanaugh, is a beautiful young widow still grieving the loss of her husband. She does what most of us do when we are lonely (she throws herself into her career). Hattie is talented and resourceful. She is passionate about taking run-down old houses and selling them after she and her crew restore them to a grand showstopper home.

One day a good-looking producer approaches Hattie about turning her renovations into a reality show called "Home Wreckers". This sounds like the dream of a lifetime until the house Hattie is working on is shrouded in mystery and connected to the disappearance of a young school teacher years ago. Will the case finally be solved?

This was my first Mary Kay Andrews book. I can't wait to read more of her work. Her talent for placing readers visually in the scenes with written descriptions is amazing. Her characters are relatable and real.

Applause to Mary Kay Andrews for making me smile with her newest feel-good 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ book!

A huge thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, for allowing me the honor of reviewing this outstanding book. I loved every page of it!

May's "Best Beach" Read!

Congrats to MKA for 30 years of fabulous books and hours of entertainment. The Homewreckers is making all the lists from @nytimes @publisherswkly @usatoday @wsj list @siba_books list, and many more. A HIT!

Summer would NOT be complete without a Mary Kay Andrews sizzling story for the perfect escape.

THE HOMEWRECKERS provides an intriguing, compelling cold-case murder, delicious beachside renovations, a design TV show, a tantalizing romance, vacation rentals, and MKA's signature wit, sass, style, and southern charm. Set in coastal Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia.

No one does it better!

Hattie Kavanaugh, the protagonist— lost her husband seven years earlier after a motorcycle accident. She works with her father-in-law, Tug, her best friend, Cassidy, and Cass's mother, Zenobia. They are in the business of flipping houses in Savannah, GA.

However, after losing all her savings in her latest renovation, she accepts an offer to star in a TV show. However, they will be underfoot and she has to be onscreen and work with Mo Lopez, the producer, and good-looking designer.

During the renovation, things from the past keep popping up and all sorts of problems. A local schoolteacher went missing years ago, and the body was never round. Deadly secrets from the previous owners add even more intrigue and suspense.

Fans are going to LOVE this one!

I also recommend Ten Beach Road Novel Wendy Wax Beach Read Series (Florida) and Karen White's The Shop on Royal Street (New Orleans), which are both fun reads that I enjoyed. Renovations, old houses, TV, mystery murder from the past with added ghosts.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for a digital and print ARC to read, enjoy, and review.

Thank you to St. Martins Press for sending me a free copy in exchange for a review!

The Homewreckers marks the second book I've read by Mary Kay Andrews (the first being The Santa Suit) and I am glad to say that I enjoyed this one a heck of a lot more than the first. I took a risk picking this up in the middle of a massive reading slump (the last three books I read just did NOT work for me), and I was pleasantly surprised by how well this HGTV knock off storyline lured me in and kept me flipping all 435 pages.

Here are 4 things I liked about THE HOMEWRECKERS:

1. This book had a good mix of character development and background, plot moving storyline, and some mystery mixed in. There was just enough of each aspect to keep me invested and not so much that it felt like overkill (for instance, I never felt like we were getting too into the nitty gritty about, say, painting the cabinets in the house, or something). It kept moving!

2. The setting on Tybee Island made this the quintessential summer read, with descriptions of hot, humid air and a beachy backdrop. I will have to make her future books always be on the docket for the warm months, because this was just perfect.

3. The main character, Hattie Kavenaugh, was likable and endearing, and carried her own in a mostly male dominated industry (contracting work). We also got to see her have to struggle through some very human things, like grieving her husband, feeling torn on being attracted to someone new, and making poor financial decisions.

4. I love some true crime, so the whole solving a cold case situation really was the icing on the cake for me! So much fun to read and wasn't so heavy that it felt scary. I think anyone could read it without having nightmares.

My biggest drawback to this one happens in the last 75 pages or so, and I don't want to spoil that, but it wasn't a huge deal. I still really enjoyed the reading experience and will definitely read more books by MKA!
